about

About this unassuming Experimental Ambient EP --

My friend Chris Nolte stopped by while he was visiting California. I never hear from him and hadn't seen him for many years, just happens from time to time. When I asked if he wanted to jam with any of the wide variety of instruments I have, he said he didn't play anything.

So I asked what sort of artistic things he likes to do.

He responded that he's not a very creative person.

I knew this to be untrue, as his conversations are fun and inventive. So I nudged him to think of something he could do.

His eyes lit up when he remembered that he discovered a while back while camping out with the rocks and fire that he could put some water in a Mason jar and get a good sound from it.

I jumped up and grabbed a small empty jar. We experimented with the right amount of water to get the best sound as he practiced.

Once I hit Record, he played the water jar, hitting the lid with his hand and moving it. He is indeed creative after all.

I would have recorded more but I was taking a break from an intense all day long week long music business conference to see him. A human playful experience was just what I needed to counter the formality of industry rules. I only could steal a short time from the seminar.

But even so, the recording of the water jar inspired more good times with the mic, with his jar the core of all the other stems on all the tracks. Except on Water Bright, in which case I worked with only his percussion.

It won't be sent to a distributor. But Irreversible Logic of Water played on R Duck's Sound Wheels radio show on KZSU, out of Stanford, CA on the Auntie Gravitie's Garden episode. www.podomatic.com/podcasts/rduckshow/episodes/2023-01-25T10_00_00-08_00When Chris passes through again, I can tell him.

This young naturalist thus provided the foundation for which I added layers of voice, synth and acoustic instruments and did the sound design.

The previous album was By Voicelight, a highly ambitious production with every song unique, carefully composed and structured, with Romantic-Era influenced complex piano, and sung lyrics. The next album after this one, Untameable, explores a wide variety of acoustic and percussive instruments played in unintended ways

If you're in the mood for fluid: one of the tracks on the next album is called "Made of Water" and is already released as part of a compilation album put out by Sounds for the Soul Records on Bandcamp. The foundation is created in the kitchen sink. soundsforthesoul.bandcamp.com/track/sound-animal-made-of-water

This little lo-fi EP, by contrast to the other Sound Animal stuff is pure homegrown fun with a friend who spends a lot of time in nature and provided simple old fashioned acoustic innovation for the playfully primal percussion. That element of water makes it real, fluid, sliding, spontaneous, not something we're used to hearing.

Celebrate water.
